Sex, she thought, as she went about her day. That was the solution. She would seduce him. It was the only way to prove—once and for all—that she was his.

Laurel thought back to when their sex life was vigorous and new. During the early days of their courtship and marriage—before Evan was born—they were young and hungry, and went at it every chance they got. She remembered Doug as being insatiable. And she, too, was feral and eager. His mouth on her neck...his eyes on her body...and the kissing! It was all enough to make her weak with desire.

Back then, she sometimes came to him in diaphanous negligees—pale and teasing in their ostensible innocence—or in sinful black satin, alluringly wicked. None of it was necessary, though. Not for Doug. She could come home from a run, sweaty and dirty, and he’d beg her not to shower. The intensity of his yearning made Laurel feel beautiful, and that was powerfully seductive. Still, she liked the eroticism of primping and dressing up for him. Sometimes, she even wore high heels in bed. She laughed now, thinking about it, which surprised the customer she was ringing out at the register.

Everything had changed after Evan was born, and they were both so tired from parenthood it was hard to find the energy. And the time. Sex had to be scheduled, which left little room for romance. And she was no longer in love with her own body, so it became almost a chore—one more responsibility on her plate. A wifely duty. Not that she didn’t enjoy the sex once they got going. But she rarely felt that burning desire of their early love.

They settled into a pattern, then, of having sex only occasionally. And she had to be the initiator, because he got his feelings hurt by her rejection. So once in a while she would cuddle up next to him in bed and he’d respond. A few years ago, though, he started saying things like, “I’ve had a long day.” And she understood the code. But that was at night. In the morning, he would still be responsive, his erection ready for action. Then, he started pulling away no matter what time she reached for him. And so she simply stopped, and that was it. Sex was in their past, and neither of them had the energy to bring up the subject of Viagra.

Now, though—thanks to her secret omission of the blood pressure medication—his erections were back naturally. At least on some mornings. And though she occasionally felt a small stirring of desire, Laurel’s resentment had been too great. Why should she give him sex when he couldn’t even bother to get a job?

As she searched for the bar code on a bag of organic brown rice fusilli pasta, Laurel considered how she would go about seducing him. It might not take much more than going into the guest room in the morning and crawling into bed with him. Sure he was still depressed and angry, but she was certain his physical desire would take over once she touched him.
